Oh, I sat down to read this at just the right time. After a busy and stressful weekend, I worked hard today to set life back on track today. And through it all I was fighting anxious feelings of overwhelm. Thank you so much for sharing this. It is a welcome reminder.

Loved a story told by Alexandra Stoddard who was going through a time as you described; her boss looked at her and asked the trouble? After sharing her tale she ended it by saying she was overwhelmed! Her boss nodded and said, “Sandy, you’re just whelmed. And thankfulness will get you over your whelmed!”

Lord Jesus, thank you for faithfully carrying us through our times of whelm!

This was so encouraging! I was just chatting with a friend about this very thing--about how the work of motherhood is constant and sometimes exhausting, and the messages that we get from our culture today are often that it is just so hard, and we deserve a break, and we deserve a fancy coffee, and we definitely deserve a glass of wine. I would like to see a culture shift in encouraging mothers that this work is hard and ongoing AND holy and to grow us and perfect us to be like Christ. My biggest perspective shift came last year when I visited a local women's monastery: as I watched all the nuns, they were constantly working and moving. They were never hurrying, they were never impatient, they made time to stop and chat with anyone who came their way, but they always had a purpose, they were always going here to make something, or there to pray, or over here to clean up after a guest. It was incredible, and it really helped me reflect on my thought patterns and learning to just do the next thing God put in front of me. Thank you for sharing your writing and encouraging us in this change of perspective!
